Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certifies REAL ALLOY against ASI Performance Standard

REAL ALLOY has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) certification for the recycling of aluminium scrap and production of wrought and foundry alloys at 11 production facilities located in Canada, the United States of America and Mexico, plus central strategic and administrative functions at their headquarters in Beachwood, Ohio, USA. The plants produce alloys to specification by converting pre- and post-consumer aluminium scrap into liquid metal and ingot form.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that REAL ALLOY has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard V2 for the recycling of aluminium scrap and production of wrought and cast alloys at its facilities in Chicago Heights (IL, USA), Friendly (WV, USA), Goodyear (AZ, USA), Loudon (TN, USA), Mississauga (ON, CA), Monclova (Coah., MX), Morgantown (KY, USA), Post Falls (ID, USA), Sapulpa (OK, USA), Wabash Specification (IN, USA), and Wabash Recycle (IN, USA), as well as central strategic and administrative functions at their headquarters in Beachwood (OH, USA). The plants supply adiverse range of industry sectors, such as automotive and transportation, packaging, manufacturing, and construction, with specified foundry and wrought alloys in both molten and solid ingot forms.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V2 {2017) defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Real Alloy Holding, LLC was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd. The audit took place prior to May 31, 2023, thus enabling a Performance Standard V2 certification.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We warmly congratulate REAL ALLOY for achieving ASI Performance Standard V2 certification at these 11 recycling facilities. The company’s recycling of a wide range of aluminium scrap makes an important contribution to the circular economy of a range of downstream sectors. ASI certification demonstrates REAL ALLOY’s commitment to responsible production practices, helping it to align with increasing expectations of investors, customers, and other stakeholders on risk mitigation, supply chain transparency and responsible sourcing.”

Terrance J. Hogan, President and CEO of REAL ALLOY said, “At REAL ALLOY, sustainability is at the core of our business, beliefs and values. With our products produced from over 96% recycled materials last year, and a carbon intensity of 0.38 Mt CO2e / Mt aluminium processed, we are a leader in the decarbonization efforts in North America and the world. REAL ALLOY shares ASl’s strong sense of responsibility to associates and the community. Successfully
certifying all of our melting and milling facilities to the ASI Performance Standard demonstrates our continuing commitment to sustainability leadership, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.”

ASI Certification process

ASI was formed as a multi-stakeholder initiative to drive a global, sector-wide transformation for aluminium. We work on building capacity to understand, agree and deliver measurable and continual improvements in the global aluminium chain.

ASl’s Standards apply throughout the supply chain, from mining through to downstream sectors that use aluminium in their products. All current ASI members in the ‘Production and Transformation’ and ‘Industrial Users’ classes work towards their ASI certifications within two years of joining ASI. For more information, consult the full list of ASI Members as well as the list of certified ASI Members.

ASl’s custom-built online assurance platform, elementAL, underpins the entire certification workflow forboth the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard. ASI members seeking Certification and ASI Accredited Auditors use elementAL to manage self-assessments, audit planning, documentation of evidence and findings from site audits, and reporting. The ASI Secretariat also carry out oversight of submitted audit reports through elementAL, to ensure conformity with ASl’s assurance procedures, before Certifications are issued.

Full ASI certification is valid for three years, usually with a surveillance audit at approximately 18 months. Provisional Certification is valid for one year, with a surveillance audit at approximately six months. More information is available in the ASI Assurance Manual.

About ASI

ASI Certification process

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative {ASI) is a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organisation. It works towards responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium following an entire value chain approach. To this end, ASI launched its Certification program for the Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard in December 2017, and after a three-year revision process, published new versions of the Standards in May 2022.

ASI has identified four priority sustainability issues where we believe we can most contribute to driving change in the aluminium value chain to 2030: climate change, circularity, nature positive and human rights. These are high-level priority challenges for our global future, and it is essential to recognise the inter-connections between each. Ultimately, they must be tackled together to support effective and just transitions that minimise unintended consequences and maximise positive impact. Beyond the ASI Standards, we engage directly with affected communities and collaborate on data, research and other activities.

ASl’s 300+ members include leading civil society organisations; companies with activities in bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting, semi-fabrication, product and component manufacturing, as well as consumer and commercial goods, including the automotive, construction and packaging industries; industry associations and other supporters. The audit represents an overview by an independent third-party auditor of the extent of compliance by the member with the nominated ASI Standard at the audited entity/site and at the point-in-time of the audit. It does not represent an audit of all safety, environmental, social and governance factors. The auditor is selected and engaged by the member from ASI Accredited Auditing Firms. The resulting audit report is provided to ASI to undertake a limited internal oversight assessment as described on ASl’s website, but ASI does not otherwise review the content or accuracy of the independent auditor’s findings. Any witness assessment that may be conducted by or on behalf of ASI is an on-site observation of Accredited Auditing Firms carrying out audits but does not represent a parallel or shadow audit by ASI. Accordingly, ASI makes no warranties or representations about the content, accuracy or completeness of any audit report or consequent certification of a member’s site by ASI. The audit report and certification represent a summary and general overview of conformance against the nominated ASI Standards as assessed by the auditor at that time.
